Dal Tadka (Spiced Lentils)

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup toor dal (pigeon peas)
  • 1 large onion, chopped
  • 2 tomatoes, chopped
  • 1 tbsp ginger-garlic paste
  • 1 green chili, chopped
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • 1 tsp mustard seeds
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1/2 tsp red chili powder
  • 1 tsp garam masala
  • 2 tbsp oil
  • Fresh cilantro for garnish
  • Salt to taste

Instructions:

  1. Cook Dal: Wash and cook toor dal in a pressure cooker with 2 cups water until soft.
  2. Prepare Tadka: Heat oil in a pan, add cumin seeds and mustard seeds. When they splutter, add onions and cook until golden.
  3. Add Aromatics: Add ginger-garlic paste and green chili, sauté for a minute.
  4. Tomatoes and Spices: Add chopped tomatoes, turmeric powder, red chili powder, and salt. Cook until tomatoes are soft.
  5. Combine Dal: Add the cooked dal to the pan. Stir well and cook for 10 minutes. Adjust consistency with water if needed.
  6. Finish: Add garam masala and cook for another 5 minutes.
  7. Garnish: Garnish with fresh cilantro and serve with rice or bread.
